Both these buildings have finds incorporated within the make-ups for their floors which suggest deliberate deposition (Fig. 4.24). From one building came the mandible of a young adult female, presumably already in skeletal form, from the other a polished Neolithic flint axe, and both buildings included a complete pig’s scapula beneath their floors. Given what they are, it is highly unlikely that these objects could have been deposited by chance, but what might they mean? Perhaps we should think of them as offerings to appease or ward off spirits, while at the same time ensuring a long life for the buildings and their inhabitants.
